Local Motors is a next generation American car company. It is the first disruptive entrant in the US automotive industry in decades and it is the first of its kind.
Local Motors will design, manufacture, and bring to market innovative, safer, more functional, lightweight, efficient cars through a revolutionary, local assembly and retail experience. These cars will revolutionize not only automobiles, but also the very structure of auto-making, auto-selling, and auto-servicing.
The competition: Custom Car Skins® Competitions will become an avenue for Local Motors customers to host competitions on the design of their LM vehicle exterior. If you didn?t know, all Local Motors vehicles are vinyl wrapped instead of painted because this process is more sustainable, cost effective, and customizable. Such a process also lends itself really nicely to Custom Car Skins®.

refreshments will be providedFor the last two decades ethnography has become the popular method of design research. This has coincided with a belief that since people cannot tell you what they want the best insights come from observing unmet needs. Implicit in this thinking is the assumption that unmet desires can be extrapolated from current behavior as well.
Participatory design or co-creation research enables people to express what they want in an actionable and inspirational manner. While this approach has been used in design research for almost two decades it still lacks thorough understanding and awareness.
In this hands on workshop attendees will experience this approach.

Museum professional and Renaissance woman Lowery Stokes Sims has had a long and distinguished career in the arts. A specialist in modern and contemporary art, she is known for her particular expertise in the work of African, Latino, Native and Asian American artists. Sims first joined the staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as an assistant in the education department before advancing to become the museum’s first African American curator.

Design Research Workshop with Lextant
Last Thursday, 5/14 IDSA Boston was treated to a workshop put on by Marty Gage from Lextant design. The workshop was designed to get us thinking that people can tell you what they want. We experienced an example of how participatory design can be measured, focused and conclusive. We learned how to use images, words and familiar products to help people “collage” what their ideal experience would be in relation to interacting with an object. During the workshop we were able to discuss our similarities of ideas and come up with common themes that could be conclusions to assist a design team when solving design problems or concepting new ideas. GreenSled photos on Core77.
From Core77: The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Boston hosted their first ever Green Sled Design Challenge 09, a contest that required participants to think, design and build a green sled made of 90 percent recycled materials.
For prizes, the Greenest Award went to team Epic from Ecovative Design for their recycled cardboard sled. Radius took the Best Aesthetic Award with its ironing board sled. Best Overall was awarded to team Dwight Ideas (a Mass Art student team) for a design that combined recycled skis and bicycle parts to create a unique and high performance sled.
Other entries consisted of sleds made of recycled/reused soda bottles, mailing tubes, tree limbs and chairs, among other things. The Co-sponsors were extremely pleased with the results. “The eco-benefit, industry support, and great turnout have us planning a 2nd annual Green event next year” – said Mario Gonzalez, Event Organizer and Designer at Radius Product Development – “It’s a good way to keep everyone thinking green while having fun doing it.”

Holiday Wrap & Party.
This years wrap, held at Continuum was a great success again this year. Benefiting the Children’s Ward at the Boston Medical Center, this years wrap took in a record number of gifts. The program coordinator from the BMC, Dottie Keosaian, said that not only do these gifts help to cheer up those who are in the BMC itself, but also displaced families who would not be able to give their children gifts if it weren’t for these donations. Everyone enjoyed creating unique wrapping paper for the gifts by making quick drawings with markers on craft paper. Its interesting to see the patterns that designers come up with when they have to create designs on the spur of the moment. Both Lifetime Brands and Bose Corporation donated raffle prizes to the event as a reward for those who were able to attend. Thanks again to this years gracious host Continuum for sponsoring this years wrap.

Real Green Conference.
On November 8, 2008, IDSA Boston held its 4th annual one day sustainable design conference at the Massachusetts College of Art. Titled Real Green, the conference featured speakers who take sustainable design beyond theory and have put it into practice. In addition to the speakers, conference attendees also enjoyed a “Material Petting Zoo” brought by Ecolect, an online community to provide information about eco-friendly materials.
